|DeKalb County Vacant Property Registry
Beginning June 1, 2014, property owners are required to register vacant residential properties
The DeKalb County Vacant Property Registry was established as a means to protect neighborhoods from becoming blighted through the lack of adequate maintenance and security of properties that are vacant.
Improperly maintained and unsecure vacant properties can become a hazard to the health and safety of anyone who may come on or near the property and can adversely affect the aesthetic and economic attributes of communities. Difficulties often arise in locating the person responsible for maintenance of vacant properties. DeKalb County finds that there is a substantial need directly related to the public health, safety and welfare to comprehensively address these concerns through the Vacant Property Registry Ordinance.
The Vacant Property Registry Ordinance will require the owners of vacant properties to provide the County with official information for contacting the responsible party for bringing the vacant property into compliance. Property owners are required by law to register the property with DeKalb County within 90 days of vacancy and pay a fee of $100 or face fines up to $1000.
Vacant property owners may designate a local property agent located within the State of Georgia to ensure security and maintenance of the property; comply with code enforcement orders issued by the County; provide a trespass authorization upon request of an enforcement officer; conduct inspections of the property; accept rental payments from tenants, if no management company is otherwise employed; and serve as an agent authorized to receive code enforcement citations and notice pertaining to any court proceeding or administrative enforcement.
