Investigative Internship at the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office

  • Internship Requirements
    • Able to commit to three days per week between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m from January 11 to April 21, 2022.
    • Must complete a minimum of 180 hours over a 12-week period to qualify for course credit.
    • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.
    • Background check and drug screen may be required.
    • Proof of Professional Liability Insurance is required.
  • Applicant Criteria
    • Candidates should be seeking a Master of Criminal Justice, or a related field.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic.
    • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
    • Knowledge of law enforcement and chain-of-custody procedure.
  • Internship Objectives
    • Aid investigators with scene and evidence processing on non-criminal cases.
    • Work closely with police, fire, EMS, and hospital personnel to gather information to help determine cause and manner of death.
    • Research emerging forensic science issues.
    • Assist investigators with completing reports, issuing subpoenas, and decedent identification.
    • Provide quality assurance checks to maximize the effectiveness of the medicolegal database.
    • Assist with data entry, tracking, filing, analysis, and modeling.
