Community partnership expands safety initiatives to build a stronger, more secure neighborhood
The Tucker-Northlake Community Improvement District (CID) announced a new partnership with DeKalb County Commissioner Robert Patrick to expand police patrol coverage throughout District 1. Commissioner Patrick has allocated $100,000 to enhance the CID's existing off-duty officer patrol program, extending coverage to residential and commercial areas in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia.
Since 2018, the Tucker-Northlake CID has funded off-duty DeKalb County officers to patrol the district. Last year, in response to an increased desire from commercial property owners to have stepped up patrols to reduce crime and other disturbances, the CID board of directors authorized allocating $100,000 from its reserves to more than double off-duty patrols in the area. The additional coverage and visibility during the summer months, which has become known across the country as a time when criminal activity increases, will ideally help reduce crime.
"This partnership represents our ongoing commitment to support the good work of the DeKalb County Police Department by funding supplemental patrols," said Matthew Lee, Executive Director of the Tucker-Northlake CID. “Ultimately, public safety is a shared responsibility that belongs to everyone. When we work together, it strengthens communities where people feel secure and local businesses can grow."
The collaboration between the CID and District 1 emerged from discussions between the CID and county leadership about the need for additional police presence in the area in 2024. When Commissioner Patrick learned of the CID's successful patrol program, he became interested in expanding it to other areas. With unanimous approval from the governing authority, he was able to allocate funding for the effort.
"I believe in community partnerships that deliver real results for our DeKalb County community," said Commissioner Robert Patrick. "The Tucker-Northlake CID has demonstrated an effective model for enhancing public safety, and I'm pleased to support expanding this program."
Under the partnership, officers will provide detailed weekly activity reports to the CID and Commissioner Patrick's office.
“The Tucker-Northlake CID continues to advocate for increased DeKalb County Police resources in the CID, and we are continuing to allocate our own funds to support improved safety locally,” Lee said. The expanded patrol program will serve unincorporated District 1, including neighborhoods such as Evansdale, Embry Hills, Fleetwood Hills, North Briarcliff, Northcrest, Northlake, Pleasantdale, and Sequoyah Woods, as well as commercial areas.
“A strong and visible law enforcement presence helps deter criminal activity and sends a clear message that these are communities where people care and crime is not tolerated,” Patrick said.
Officers will distribute public safety information during their patrols and encourage community members to report crimes and suspicious activity. In emergencies, residents should dial 911, while other concerns can be reported via the non-emergency number: 404-294-2911.
