Food distribution scheduled for Nov. 4 at Plaza Fiesta

DeKalb County Government has formed a new partnership to assist in its ongoing fight against high grocery prices.

The county’s food distribution network will now include a coalition of Chamblee-based organizations that have been working to assist food-insecure residents in north DeKalb.

On Saturday, Nov. 4, beginning at 9 a.m., volunteers will distribute 400 boxes of fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein at Plaza Fiesta, 166 Buford Hwy. NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30345.

“Food insecurity is a growing problem throughout DeKalb County,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said. “Our new partnership will boost our efforts to help residents who are struggling to feed their families.”

“Members of the coalition are excited to partner with DeKalb County to expand our mission by helping families who are challenged by food insecurity in the Chamblee/Brookhaven area,” said Christina Porter, Chamblee Coalition for Homelessness (CCH) founder. “This will be a much-needed blessing for 400 families.”

The Chamblee-based coalition, born during the COVID-19 pandemic, is comprised of citizens, nonprofits, government agencies, and faith communities that are seeking solutions for DeKalb residents who are in need.

Every Saturday for three years, CCH provided the logistics for the Sack Lunch Brigade which delivered approximately 300,000 lunches to nine homeless shelters across the city of Atlanta.

According to Porter, “The coalition demonstrates the power of one individual’s efforts to organize neighbors, nonprofits, churches, and government agencies into a coalition where each entity contributes what they can to solve a problem in our community.”

The nonprofit coalition includes The Community Assistance Center, The St. Vincent de Paul Society, The Salvation Army, The Elizabeth Foundation, The Brookhaven Clergy Group, and Bagel Rescue, among others.
