Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson to lead clean-up

This Saturday, July 29, 2023, Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson will be hosting a clean-up workday at the Arabia Mountain Vineyard to help DeKalb County's first wine grape vineyard.

Arabia Mountain Vineyard, located in Stonecrest, GA, is family-owned and is the only wine-grape vineyard in the metro Atlanta area. It covers over 18-acres and is a premier tourist destination for residents in the state and across the U.S.

Volunteers will join Commissioner Cochran-Johnson and the Arabia Mountain Vineyard team for a day of productivity in assisting with cleaning the grounds, landscaping, tending the grapes and vineyard, as well as meeting agriculture enthusiasts and members of the community interested in agriculture and vinification.

"This vineyard is certain to become a tourist attraction that enhances the greater DeKalb community," said Commissioner Cochran-Johnson. “As a lover of nature, I was impressed by the natural beauty the vineyard offers. From the viewing station that overlooks the idyllic 18 acres to the careful crafting of nature trails, firepits, and waterfall, natural beauty abounds.”

Across Georgia and particularly in North Georgia there has been an expansion of agritourism as world-class vineyards emerge. Georgia has become known for its wine grapes and the demand for wine has increased. Agriculture and tourism are the state’s top two economic generators. Agritourism directly represents a value of over $12.2 billion in the Georgia economy.

“The Arabia Mountain Vineyard is a win-win not only for Georgia but also the Stonecrest area, which is seeking to increase economic development by recruiting, retaining, and attracting businesses such as this one,” said Commissioner Cochran-Johnson. “Our success in DeKalb hinges on bringing more businesses to the county but also providing needed services and products for our residents and consumers.”
