DeKalb Celebrates the East Central DeKalb Community and Senior Center with a Time Capsule Dedication Ceremony

DeKalb County celebrated the recent opening of the East Central DeKalb Community and Senior Center with a dedication ceremony and placement of a time capsule to mark the occasion on Monday, December 4.

“This is a momentous occasion,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said. “The center and time capsule will serve as reminders of the importance of improving the health, wellness and quality of life of our citizens.”

The time capsule features memorabilia from several county offices including the Chief Executive Officer, Commission District 4, Commission District 7, Human Services, Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs and Community Development

It was placed in the multipurpose room to be sealed for 25 years and unveiled in celebration in 2048.

The county broke ground on the East Central DeKalb Community and Senior Center in April 2021 and completed the construction in July 2023 with an investment of $9.6 million.  

The new Center is a 24,000 square feet facility located at 4885 Elam Road, Stone Mountain. The site accommodates approximately 131 parking spaces, covered drop-off area with a main entrance, service entrance, landscaping, and pedestrian plaza. This facility also includes a 75’ x 30’ foot indoor heated saltwater lap pool and a large exterior patio with furniture.

Additionally, key components are a large multi-purpose/dining room with a moveable partition wall and stage, a large commercial kitchen, lounge areas, library/reading room, a fitness room, aerobics/dance room, two large classrooms with a moveable partition wall, arts and crafts room, a billiards/game room, administrative offices, restrooms, locker rooms for men and women, security cameras, and Wi-Fi.
