DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson was among those honored when the Asian Americans Advancing Justice–Atlanta virtually hosted its Tenth Annual Asian American Advocacy Day, with the theme of #AAPIRising: The New South.

Asian American Advocacy Day highlighted the legislative advocacy of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and brought together elected officials for relationship building and learning opportunities.

In 2020, there was a record turnout for AAPI voters, and for many, that was their first time casting a vote. While it’s critically important, the work isn’t just about being a critical force in elections, but also about being a strong voice during legislative sessions. The goal is to build a culture of civic engagement for all.

Commissioner Johnson played an integral part in making Georgia a better place for all and served as a champion to the work. He worked tirelessly as the chair of DeKalb County Operations Committee to ensure a collaborative effort among all stakeholders and ensured an unprecedented voter experience.

Due to COVID-19, the event was hosted virtually to celebrate the wins and collaboratively planned efforts. Additional distinguished representatives, senators, and county commissioners were honored included:

  • Rep. Bee Nguyen
  • Rep. Bill Werkheiser
  • Sen. Chuck Hufstetler
  • Rep. David Wilkerson
  • Sen. Harold Jones
  • Gwinnett Commissioner Kirkland Carden
  • Sen. Sally Harrrell
