DECATUR, GA. – More than 300 DeKalb County employees were honored Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, during the county’s quarterly recognition program.

The program recognized the efforts of employees who deliver exceptional customer service to the citizens of this community.

“It’s something to be able to give people their honor when their honor is due,” Interim CEO Lee May said.

Among the honorees was Officer Gale Karabeika who has been with the DeKalb County Police Department for 40 years. Officer Karabeika works in the special operations unit and says she has no plans of retiring.

“This is fun and rewarding,” Karabeika said. “I still enjoy it, so I will keep working."

Karabeika’s colleagues says she shows up daily with an abundance of energy and a great attitude despite her ongoing battle with cancer.

“I have nothing bad to say about her,” said Officer Ronald Knock. “I know what she’s going through firsthand and anyone who can go through chemo treatments and still show up to work three or four days a week is a fighter.”

Karabeika always had plans to become a police officer. Her father, who was a lieutenant with the New York Police Department, inspired her to follow in his footsteps.

“At that time there was always a level of respect and admiration for the police,” Karabeika said. “Hopefully the culture will change and we will get back to that.”

Other honorees at the ceremony include Rosetta Hayes, Louis Davis Jr. and Mitzi Green who are celebrating 30 years of service. Chrystia Pharo and Superior Court Judge Clarence Seeliger are celebrating 35 years of service with DeKalb County.
