DECATUR, Ga. – The Lou Walker Senior Center African American History Class will host “Juneteenth: A Day of Remembrance,” Monday, June 19, at 2:30 p.m., located at 2536 Panola Road, Lithonia, GA, 30058.

Juneteenth is an annual celebration of remembrance, recognizing the ending of slavery in the United States. Although the official day of emancipation was Jan. 1, 1863, word did not reach the enslaved in Galveston, Texas, until June 19, 1865. The observance of Juneteenth is about the journey and achievement of African Americans, from a horrific period of sanctioned enslavement to the pinnacle of human endeavors.

The African-American History class at Lou Walker Senior Center is one of the facility’s original lifelong learning classes and serves as a source of education, enrichment and fellowship. Instructor Frances King utilizes her studies in anthropology and psychology, extensive research and input from students to facilitate well rounded discussions of African-American history.
