Greenspace replaces former site of blight

DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs, DeKalb officials and staff celebrated a new off-leash area for dogs at Brookside Park, located at 3661 North Decatur Road in Decatur.

The site of a formerly-abandoned apartment complex, the land is now a greenspace that includes a community garden, pavilion, playground, walking trails and dog park.

DeKalb County District 6 Commissioner Kathie Gannon worked with Community Development to secure sustainability grants to fund the project.

“This was a seven-acre worn-down dilapidated apartment complex, and at the time, we were able to draw down federal funds to acquire the site,” said Commissioner Gannon. “Now it’s one of DeKalb County’s newest parks, and instead of this property being a negative force on the surrounding community, it has become an asset.”

The fenced off-leash area is three-quarters of an acre with a water fountain, benches and disposable bags. Dogs that use the park must be licensed, current on vaccinations, accompanied by their owners and leashed outside of the fenced area.
