The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management has successfully completed repairs on both the 16-inch and 36-inch water mains at 33 Covington Rd. in Avondale Estates. Water service has been fully restored, and the system is back at normal pressure.

“We are incredibly grateful to the teams of men and women who worked around the clock over a 40-hour period to complete this highly sensitive and complex repair,” said DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran Johnson. “Their precision and commitment ensured the job was done safely and efficiently. We also thank the residents and businesses affected by this disruption for their patience and understanding throughout the process.”

Due to the nature of the break, which occurred in an area densely packed with other underground utilities, crews used a specialized hydroexcavation technique to avoid further damage during the repair. The break was the result of third party contracting activity near the site.

Now that water service has resumed, some customers may temporarily notice discolored water (commonly known as “brown water”) or air in their lines. Both are normal during system repressurization. Residents are advised to run cold water taps for several minutes until the water runs clear and any air is purged from the system.
