Community leaders, nonprofit partners, and residents gathered on Saturday, December 13, for the Spirit of DeKalb Awards, an annual gala celebrating service, leadership, and compassion across DeKalb County. Proceeds from the event will directly support efforts to combat food insecurity and ensure greater access to nutritious meals for individuals and families in need.
The gala was hosted by award winning radio personality, comedian and philanthropist, Ryan Cameron, featured entertainment by renowned artists, electric violinist, Alex Anh and Orchestra Noir.
Held in the spirit of unity and generosity, the Spirit of DeKalb Awards recognized individuals and organizations whose work exemplifies commitment to strengthening the community. The evening highlighted the ongoing challenge of food insecurity in DeKalb County and the importance of collective action to address hunger and its root causes.
“We are here to Celebrate excellence across leadership, innovation, community impact, and service,” said CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. “The Spirit of DeKalb Awards not only honors those who serve with purpose, but also helps provide critical resources to support families who are struggling to put food on the table.”
To kick off the evening, a special presentation was made to The Same House, an organization whose mission is rooted in bringing communities together, bridging social and economic divides, and creating opportunities for those most in need. The Same House was presented with a $25,000 donation from the county in partnership, to continue to the fight against food insecurity.
The gala featured an awards presentation, dinner, fellowship, and opportunities for attendees to contribute through sponsorships and donations. Funds raised will support local food access initiatives, hunger-relief programs, and community partnerships focused on creating sustainable solutions to food insecurity throughout DeKalb County.
Special recognition was given in remembrance of DeKalb County’s fallen first responders, Officer David Rose and Master Firefighter Preston Fant. Officer Rose was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest award bestowed by the DeKalb County Police Department, as well as the Meritorious Service Award, the department’s version of the Purple Heart. Master Firefighter Fant was awarded the DeKalb County Fire Rescue’s Medal of Honor.
Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting the DeKalb community will never be forgotten.
