In anticipation of severe winter weather expected to impact the region, DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has declared a State of Emergency, activating a coordinated, countywide response focused on public safety, preparedness, and rapid response.
The State of Emergency allows DeKalb County to mobilize resources, coordinate closely with emergency partners, and respond swiftly as weather conditions evolve. County departments are actively monitoring forecasts and preparing for potential impacts, including hazardous road conditions, power outages, and service disruptions.
As part of these efforts, all DeKalb County government buildings, events, and County-sponsored programming will be closed this weekend, including recreation centers, libraries, and non-essential in-person services. Closures are being implemented out of an abundance of caution to protect residents and employees. County officials will continue to evaluate conditions and provide updates, including whether closures will be extended into next week.
CEO Cochran-Johnson addressed residents during a press conference alongside County leadership, emphasizing the importance of preparation and community awareness. Department heads shared the steps they are currently taking to prepare for the weather and offered safety tips to help residents reduce risk during winter conditions.
“Winter weather conditions can escalate quickly and create dangerous situations in a matter of hours,” said DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. “Our priority is keeping residents safe. We are urging everyone to stay off the roads if possible, prepare their homes and families, and pay close attention to official County updates. These proactive steps can save lives.”
To further support residents, Dr. CJ Avery, Director of the DeKalb Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), released a public safety video outlining steps individuals and families can take to prepare for winter weather, including guidance on protecting people, pets, plants, and pipes.

County officials also reminded residents that winter storms often lead to power outages. Residents should charge phones and medical devices in advance, keep flashlights and extra batteries accessible, and avoid using generators, grills, or propane heaters indoors or in garages due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
DeKalb County departments and emergency partners will continue monitoring conditions closely and sharing updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to remain attentive to official County communications and be prepared to act should conditions worsen.
For the latest updates, residents should visit the DeKalb County website and follow official County social media channels.
