DeKalb County is extremely proud of the accomplishments of several DeKalb citizen groups in creating a variety of specialized nature areas and centers. As a result of these volunteer efforts, DeKalb County has benefited from significant enhancements to the park system. At these locations, the community-based involvement has created attractions where visitors benefit from a more intensive, educational exposure to park and greenspace areas and can better appreciate the value of preserving our natural resources. Educational programs and outdoor recreation opportunities provided as a result of the volunteer involvement include environmental reclamation projects, prime bird observation areas, a wide variety of hiking trails, educational videos, nature photography, and more.
These volunteer efforts have brought to bear tremendous contributions of time and resources from the local community. In addition, the volunteers have acquired governmental and foundation grant funding and have completed many special projects through the involvement of various nonprofit organizations.
To the left are some of the park and greenspace sites where DeKalb County has partnered with community non-profit groups. DeKalb County hopes to have the opportunity to partner with additional volunteer groups to achieve similar accomplishments at the new sites that the County is purchasing as part of the park bonds and greenspace effort.
