General Information

Operating under the Georgia Revenue Codes, the Board of Assessors is responsible for the appraisal and assessment of all residential, commercial and personal property in DeKalb County. Property is appraised at 100 percent of its fair market value and assessed at 40 percent of that value.

The Board of Assessors is a five-member body of appointed citizens of DeKalb County, serving on a part time basis, who meet every other Thursday at 9:30 a.m. unless otherwise posted. They are appointed for staggered terms of four, five, or six years by the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners and operate autonomously. A chairman, vice chairman and secretary are elected on an annual basis. The Board of Assessors hires a chief appraiser to administer the functions of the Property Appraisal Department.

Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office is closed on legal holidays. All public information is available for review and copies may be obtained for a nominal fee. We are located in the Maloof Annex at 1300 Commerce Drive, Decatur, GA 30030.

Real Estate Property Tax Returns are received in this office from January 1 to April 1. You may file a real estate property tax return if you would like to declare a value on your property. All returns must be POSTMARKED by the U.S. Postal Service no later than April 1.

If you think your appraised value is incorrect you may file an appeal when you receive your Annual Assessment Notice in early June.  Please CLICK HERE for more information on the appeal process.

Personal Property Tax Returns are received in this office from January 1 to April 1. You are responsible for reporting all taxable personal property. Failure to do so may result in penalties being assessed against you. If you own a business, airplane, boat and/or motor you must file a return.  As a courtesy, return forms are mailed. However, failure to receive the forms from us by mail does not relieve you of the responsibility of filing the return. Forms are available for download on this site or can be requested by calling the Personal Property Division at (404) 371-2479.

Annual Assessment Notices will be mailed to all taxable, real property owners in late May or early June of each year.  If you disagree with the current value shown on the notice, you may file an appeal within 45 days of the date shown on the notice. Please CLICK HERE for more information on the appeal process.
