The DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department is a modern, all-hazards organization that responds to calls for fire suppression and emergency medical services from the nearly 735,000 residents of DeKalb County. The department provides coverage across 260 square miles of DeKalb County including all unincorporated areas as well as the cities of Avondale Estates, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Clarkston, Doraville, Dunwoody, Lithonia, Pine Lake, Stone Mountain, and Tucker. This is achieved by operating 26 strategically located fire stations throughout the community. Our stations are staffed by the 600 well-trained men and women and handle nearly 90,000 calls for service annually.

The DeKalb Fire Rescue Department maintains several teams that have specialized training that allow them to respond and mitigate unique calls for service such as incidents involving hazardous materials or those requiring technical rescue. Additionally the department provides a wide arrange of non-emergency services to the public though the Public Education Division, Fire Marshals Office, and the Investigations Unit.

The DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department is organized into three divisions. These three areas oversee the day-to-day operations of DeKalb County Fire Rescue.

Office of the Fire Chief

The Fire Chief, appointed by and accountable to the Chief Executive Officer of DeKalb County, serves as the highest-ranking officer in the organization. The Fire Chief is responsible for aligning all department functions with the vision of the county by developing and implementing appropriate management processes to accomplish the goals of the DeKalb County. The Fire Chief is responsible for developing the Annual Operating Budget, implementing the Business Plan and financial policies, and overseeing the overall operation of DeKalb County Fire Rescue.

Chief of Staff

Assistant Chief Kyle Bradshaw

The Chief of Staff serves within the Office of the Fire Chief and is responsible for managing the day to day administrative functions as well as interacting with other internal stakeholders. The Chief of Staff is responsible for several functional areas of the department including the following:

  • Fiscal Office

  • Compliance and Standards

  • Fire Investigations

  • Payroll and Personnel

  • Internal Affairs

  • Public Information

Operations Division

The Deputy Chief of Operations is responsible for the largest division in DeKalb County Fire Rescue. The Chief of Operation is supported by three Assistant Chiefs, 15 Battalion Chiefs, and over 500 certified firefighters that are cross trained in various levels of emergency medical care. The goal of this division is to enhance the lives and well-being of the citizens by promoting incident response, safety, training, accountability, and professional development for field personnel. The operations division staffs 22 engine companies, 4 quints, and 7 ladder trucks as well as specialty units to include technical rescue, hazardous materials, tactical medical response, and airport firefighting.

Support Services and Community Risk Reduction Division

Deputy Chief Jason G. Smith

The Deputy Chief of Support Service and Community Risk Reduction is responsible for the oversight of the maintenance and repair of all departmental vehicles, tools, and department facilities. The office is also responsible for the procurement of all equipment, materials, and supplies for the department and maintains a dedicated staff of both civilians and sworn personnel that keeps the department operation ready every day. The Deputy Chief of Support Services and Community Risk Reduction is responsible for the following areas within the organization:
