Mason Mill Park Celebrates 100th ‘Just Walk!’ Program Feb. 12

DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs, along with Carolyn Hartfield, a certified health coach, will celebrate its 100th “Just Walk!” program on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 10 a.m. at South Peachtree Creek Trail, 1340 McConnell Dr., Decatur, GA 30033.

The Just Walk! is a program of Walk with a Doc that was originated in April 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist at Mount Carmel Health Systems in Columbus, Ohio, who has been walking every weekend since 2005.

Hartsfield has led the program at the Mason Mill Park every Wednesday morning and the participation has increased since inception. The program’s purpose is to encourage physical activity by providing an opportunity for patrons in the community to walk and talk with a local health professional in a safe, fun and easily-accessible location.

“Not only do we improve our physical health by walking, it is also good for our overall wellbeing,” Hartsfield said. “You don’t need to be a marathon runner to benefit from exercise. The simple act of walking can have striking health benefits.”

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing appropriate for the weather and bring a bottle of water to keep hydrated. Patrons are encouraged to come out to learn important health facts and enjoy a fun walk in the park.
