Frequently Asked Questions
Who is counted?
- Unsheltered Homeless: people sleeping in outdoor locations such as parks, encampments, and under bridges.
- Sheltered Homeless: people staying in emergency shelters and transitional housing programs.
What is the unsheltered count methodology?
Enumeration Teams: Agency staff and community volunteers drive around pre-determined designated areas of the DeKalb CoC looking for homeless persons. If people are observed and the area is safe, the team may get out to survey. If the area is not safe, a team member records basic demographic information.
Special Coverage Teams: Experienced outreach workers drive to known hidden locations (e.g., parks, encampments). Police escorts are provided because teams walk hot spot areas. Teams count and survey people if the location is deemed safe.
How do I get assigned to a team?
Volunteers are encouraged to create a team and sign up together. If you don’t have a team, that’s okay — you will be partnered with others who also don’t have a team.
When is the training?
Training will be conducted on the night of the count at your deployment site.
